If you think this sounds extreme, listen up. Stress really does contribute to the chronic diseases that ultimately kill so many Americans, such as heart disease and diabetes. Hormones released during the stress response also interfere with sleep, damage brain areas critical to memory formation and age our cells.

Of course, stress isn’t all bad. Without change, life would be bland and boring as a blank, white wall. The trick is learning how to handle stress.

The stress response is automatic, allowing our bodies to jolt into action to avoid physical harm. Something threatens your physical, emotional, social or financial well-being and—boom—primitive brain areas jump-start the fight-or-flight response. The problem is that our stress responses are designed to help us flee a hungry lion, not manage our psychological reactions to modern problems. The good news is that we can involve higher brain areas, which have the ability to call off the alarm.

• Stress-Relief Tea

Stress Solutions: Natural Stress Relievers

Reassessing the situation in a positive light is your best tool against out-of-control stress. Though it’s easier said than done, you can learn to watch yourself for signs of stress—the clamped jaw, clenched fists, tight neck and shoulders, headache, stomach pain—then calm yourself. Stuck in traffic on your way to an important meeting? Ask yourself whether flooding your body with adrenaline will get you there faster. Is your life in danger? What can you do to soothe yourself?

Ideally, your response is not to take a deep drag on a cigarette, gobble a donut, chug an espresso, yell at fellow commuters or toss back a shot of alcohol (especially since you are driving in this scenario). The sad truth is we often use these maladaptive coping mechanisms, which only amplify the damaging effects of stress. But we can all learn to optimize our skills.
Be Positive

In the traffic scenario, instead of worrying about the uncontrollable (the state of the roads), focus on what you can do. Take a concrete action: In this case, you can call ahead and warn your colleagues that you are unavoidably detained, and give them an update. As you wait, monitor your thoughts for useless negativism. Instead, look on the bright side. (“Traffic may be bad, but I now have time listen to this interesting piece on NPR.”) While you’re at it, relax your jaw and shoulders. You don’t need them to drive.
Breathing Exercises Help

You can also try out ancient anti-stress remedies. To subdue the fight-or-flight response, take slow deep breaths. For millennia, practitioners from around the globe have prescribed breathing exercises. Research confirms that it works. Inhale for a slow count of four, hold for four, exhale for six, repeat. Counting also distracts your mind from worried thoughts.

Meditation Techniques for Stress

Repetition of a mantra or a prayer is another time-honored method.Numerous studies show that meditation helps people manage stress, improves sleep and keeps the stress hormone cortisol in check.

Yoga for Balance

Yoga, tai chi and qigong combine movement, meditation and breathing exercises; all help reduce psychological distress. Physical exercise is a great outlet for frustration. Regular exercisers report feeling less stressed. Reaching out to friends activates anti-stress hormones. Spending time in nature soothes frayed nerves. Because junk foods and sleep deprivation activate the stress response, it’s important to eat nourishing foods and get enough sleep.

Adapt to Herbs for Stress

Nevertheless, sometimes our positive thoughts and behaviors aren’t enough, especially when big challenges tax our resources—running a marathon, convalescing from illness or injury, meeting a big work deadline. Mental and physical fatigue set in.

In such cases, traditional healers have long relied on adaptogens, medicinal plants that augment resistance to physical, psychological and chemical stress. During taxing times, these herbs counter mental and physical fatigue, as well as the potentially damaging effects of chronic stress.

Recent research shows that adaptogens work at the molecular and cellular level to combat stress. In lab studies, they block stress-induced suppression of brain-protective growth factors, help restore the stress hormone cortisol to normal levels and protect against ailments associated with chronic stress.

Many of the commonly used adaptogens come from the East. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners have long valued Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) and eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus). This last herb, formerly known as Siberian ginseng, is not a true ginseng, though it belongs to the same plant family. American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has similar actions to its Asian botanical cousin.

Not only do these herbs buffer the stress response, they also enhance immune function—a good thing, since chronic stress undermines the immune system. Extracts of ginseng, eleuthero and astragalus can protect against respiratory infections and possibly cancer. Ginseng and eleuthero reduce blood sugar, which may oppose elevations induced by stress hormones.

Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine, also boasts adaptogenic herbs. Examples include bacopa (Bacopa monnieri) and ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). Both are also calming and antidepressant. Furthermore, recent research suggests bacopa (also called brahmi) improves memory in older adults. That’s comforting news, considering the detrimental effect chronic stress has on memory.

Another herb that has caught on in the United States is rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea), also called roseroot because of the fragrance from the cut roots and rhizomes. This succulent grows in Arctic regions of Asia, Europe and North America. Rumor has it that ancient Scandinavian peoples such as the Vikings chewed the root for endurance and strength. Scientists in the former Soviet Union took a keen interest in the herb. That research has continued in Russia, Sweden and elsewhere. Extracts improve cognitive function, reduce fatigue, and have antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects. In a study of people with stress-related fatigue, a concentrated root extract significantly improved attention and concentration and reduced symptoms of stress burnout and morning cortisol levels.
How to Take Adaptogenic Herbs

Adaptogens are considered tonic herbs. By definition, that means healthy, non-pregnant adults can safely take them long-term. If you’re being treated for diabetes, consult your doctor before using eleuthero, Asian ginseng or American ginseng, all of which can lower blood sugar levels. Because many adaptogens also enhance immune system function, they shouldn’t be combined with immunosuppressant drugs. An exception is chemotherapeutic drugs, in which case immunosuppression is an unintended side effect. Even then, it’s important to discuss your use of herbs with your doctor.

The part used for most adaptogens is the root, the exceptions being schisandra berries and bacopa leaves. You can find them all as standardized extracts and tinctures, both single-plant extracts and combinations of several adaptogenic herbs.

You can also consume adaptogenic herbs as tea. Schisandra berries excite all five tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, astringent and salty. For a sour candy experience, pop one in your mouth. When brewing tea from roots, use the decoction method. Bring 4 cups water and 4 tablespoons dried, chopped root to a boil, turn down the heat, simmer for a good 40 minutes, strain and drink. When making brothy soups, add 2 to 4 sliced astragalus roots and remove before serving. Their mild taste plays well with other seasonings.
Calming Herbs for Stress

Nervines are another category of herbs that comes in useful during stressful times. If stress is making you anxious by day, consider sipping an herbal tea made from chamomile (Matricaria recutita), skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) or lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). Because skullcap is a bit bitter, you might want to combine it with the much-tastier lemon balm. You can also take it as a tincture.

Stress is hard on the heart. Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is calming and quiets heart palpitations. The somewhat bitter leaves can be taken as tincture. Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) has long been used as a heart tonic. Extracts of the leaves, flowers and berries also unwind anxiety.

Plant essential oils also calm our nervous system. Prime examples include lavender (Lavandula spp.), clary sage (Salvia sclarea), jasmine (Jasminum officinale), bergamot (Citrus bergamia) and neroli (Citrus aurantium). Your choice depends upon your olfactory preferences. Choose a scent that evokes peaceful times, say, a Hawaiian vacation. When you’re feeling stressed, you can add three to five drops to a diffuser or a bowl of hot water. Topical uses include five to 10 drops in bath water or 10 to 12 drops diluted into an ounce of vegetable oil and massaged into your skin.

Note: Be aware that bergamot can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
Herbal Sleep Aids

If stress interferes with a good night’s sleep, try valerian (Valeriana officinalis), hops (Humulus lupulus) or California poppy (Eschscholzia californica). Tinctures, which act quickly, can help you get to sleep. If maintaining sleep is more of a problem, try encapsulated herbs. (For more stress relief, try this recipe for stress-relief tea.)
Fuel your Body

Because good nutrition fuels body and mind during stressful times, nutrient-packed herbs such as nettles (Urtica dioica) and dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) should be everyday staples. Consume tea from the dried leaves. During the spring and early summer, you can add spring dandelion leaves to salads. Gently sauté fresh nettle and dandelion greens. Wear gloves to pick nettles, otherwise known as stinging nettles. You don’t want to add to your stress. Once the leaves wilt, they no longer sting.

As you eat your herbaceous foods, sip your teas and perfume your living spaces, remember to breathe and feel grateful for these plant allies.

June/July 2012 By Linda B. These foods account for 90 percent of all food allergies:

    milk
    egg
fish, such as bass, flounder, or cod
crustacean shellfish, such as crab, lobster, or shrimp
tree nuts, such as almonds, pecans, or walnuts
    wheat
    peanuts
    soybeans

The law allows manufacturers a choice in how they identify the specific “food source names,” such as “milk,” “cod,” “shrimp,” or “walnuts,” of the major food allergens on the label. They must be declared either in:

the ingredient list, such as “casein (milk)” or “nonfat dry milk”
or a separate “Contains” statement, such as “Contains milk,” placed immediately after or next to the ingredient list

“So first look for the ‘Contains’ statement and if your allergen is listed, put the product back on the shelf,” says Kane. “If there is no ‘Contains’ statement, it’s very important to read the entire ingredient list to see if your allergen is present. If you see its name even once, it’s back to the shelf for that food too.”

There are many different ingredients that contain the same major food allergen, but sometimes the ingredients’ names do not indicate their specific food sources. For example, casein, sodium caseinate, and whey are all milk proteins. Although the same allergen can be present in multiple ingredients, its “food source name” (for example, milk) must appear in the ingredient list just once to comply with labeling requirements.

"Contains" and "May Contain" Have Different Meanings

If a “Contains” statement appears on a food label, it must include the food source names of all major food allergens used as ingredients. For example, if “whey,” “egg yolks,” and a “natural flavor” that contained peanut proteins are listed as ingredients, the “Contains” statement must identify the words “milk,” “egg,” and “peanuts.”

Some manufacturers voluntarily include a “may contain” statement on their labels when there is a chance that a food allergen could be present. A manufacturer might use the same equipment to make different products. Even after cleaning this equipment, a small amount of an allergen (such as peanuts) that was used to make one product (such as cookies) may become part of another product (such as crackers). In this case, the cracker label might state “may contain peanuts.”

Be aware that the “may contain” statement is voluntary, says Kane. “You still need to read the ingredient list to see if the product contains your allergen.”

When in Doubt, Leave It Out

Manufacturers can change their products’ ingredients at any time, so Kane says it’s a good idea to check the ingredient list every time you buy the product—even if you have eaten it before and didn’t have an allergic reaction.

“If you’re unsure about whether a food contains any ingredient to which you are sensitive, don’t buy the product, or check with the manufacturer first to ask what it contains,” says Kane. “We all want convenience, but it’s not worth playing Russian roulette with your life or that of someone under your care.”

source: http://www.everydayhealth.com/fda/have-food-allergies-read-the-label.aspx?xid=nl_EverydayHealthinCoordinationWithFDAFoodDrugandMedicalProductSafety_20120516

Natural Relief for Headaches

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2012/05/natural-relief-for-headaches.html

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2012/05/natural-relief-for-headaches.html#comments

Uncategorized

  [...]

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Medicine

Get natural relief for both acute and chronic pain

Some simple cures for common complaints

The real alternative

Even if you are committed to a natural lifestyle to stay healthy, you may still reach first for the occasional Tylenol or Advil if you have a headache. After all, most of us grew up believing these over-the-counter pain relievers are harmless and effective.

But the truth is, they do have side effects. Tylenol can be downright toxic to the liver. Especially if taken along with alcohol. And drugs containing ibuprofen – such as Advil and Motrin – can be tough on the stomach, intestines and kidneys…especially when taken over long periods of time.

And in many cases, there are natural alternatives that will work just as well, and sometimes better, for both acute and chronic pain.

Here are a few suggestions you might want to try...

Before deciding what remedy to take, you'll want to consider what might be causing your discomfort. For example, most headaches are caused by muscle tension. Magnesium is highly effective in relaxing muscles and relieving tension. Try taking 300 mg of magnesium next time you get a tension headache.

Dehydration is another common cause of headaches. In addition to magnesium, try drinking unsweetened coconut water. It has a lot of electrolytes, especially potassium, which can help remedy the dehydration faster than plain water. This then relieves the headache.

Another powerful pain remedy is the amino acid phenylalanine, or DLPA. Athletes and people with chronic pain often supplement with DLPA regularly since it builds up in the system and becomes more effective over time. Most people can begin with 300-500 mg. twice a day and see relief, while others may need to reach 2000-3000 mg. a day. The good news is that most people can use less DLPA over time, not more, the way you would with opiate-based pain relief.

Possible uses for DLPA include migraines, muscle cramps, and even depression as it releases endorphins. Be sure to take vitamin B6 and vitamin C along with DLPA, as they must be present in the blood for the DLPA to be absorbed.

If inflammation is what sends you running to the medicine chest most often, there are a number of natural remedies for you as well. Top on the list is curcumin, which is most popular as an ingredient in curry. Curcumin comes from turmeric, an herb native to Southeast Asia. It is also one of the most potent anti-inflammatories known to man.

Because inflammation is an underlying cause of so many autoimmune and other common diseases and conditions, I recommend taking between 500mg - 750mg a day (1-2 capsules). Be sure you check the label – it should say "mixed with bioperine" for better absorption.

There is also natural topical relief you can use in the event of muscle pain, joint pain or nerve pain. First is capsaisin, which puts the hot in hot peppers. Capsaisin works by hindering a neurotransmitter – named Substance P because its main function is to cause pain – from communicating. But don't use in the case of broken or already irritated skin, as capsaisin is as much an irritant as it is a cure.

Other topical remedies include tiger balm and arnica. Arnica is from a plant related to sunflowers, and has been used for sprains, strains and bruises for centuries. Scientific verification of arnica's effectiveness has been mixed, but to those who swear by it, especially athletes, there is no doubt it works.

Tiger balm is a blend of Chinese herbs that has a mentholated quality, and can be used in a number of ways. For headache, rub on the temples. For muscular pain, rub on the affected area. For coughing or breathing difficulty during a cold, rub on the chest. And for nasal congestion, place beneath the nostrils. You can also use on bug bites to relieve the itch (as long as the skin is not broken).

One of the problems I have with the word "alternative" medicine is that it is misleading. Many people don't think to turn to supplements or traditional medicine – or even change their diet or start exercising – until conventional medicine has failed them.

I am recommending you reverse this line of thinking. When you have a headache, joint pain, or any other minor aches or complaints, turn to your natural medicine cabinet first, not last.

You'll minimize the possibility of suffering side effects, since natural remedies tend to have less of them.

Using natural remedies also means you'll be more likely to consider the source or cause of your pain first, rather than just masking the symptoms and pushing through them.

Source: http://www.advancednaturalmedicine.com/general-health/not-now-i-have-a-headache.html

7 Simple Tips For Kicking the Sugar Habit

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2012/05/7-simple-tips-for-kicking-the-sugar-habit.html

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2012/05/7-simple-tips-for-kicking-the-sugar-habit.html#comments

Uncategorized

  [...]

Sugar Is A Drug (and how you can kick the habit!)

It’s been labeled the sweetest poison, toxic, and harmful… a drug. Unfortunately it does seem a little extreme to label a food as a drug but when you look at how sugar (especially the highly refined and processed kinds) is metabolized by your body then you can begin to understand why.

Sugar when taken in excessive amounts can lead to cravings and addictions, quite similar to those with alcohol and tobacco, yet we have no problem labeling them as drugs. As Jason Vale says from the 'Hungry For Change' film, "it's illegal to give a child cigarettes and alcohol, and so it should be, but it's not illegal to give them white refined sugar or refined fats."

We're allowing ourselves and our children to become addicted to this substance causing soaring rates of obesity, one of the leading causes of preventable death. Here are some tips on how you and your children, can kick sugar cravings for good.

7 Simple Tips For Kicking Sugar Cravings

     1. Avoid Processed Junk Foods
Sugar and processed foods can be as addictive as heroin. Eating sugar artificially stimulates a region of your brain called the nucleus accumbens, to produce dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter. Soon dopamine levels drop and we start to feel “flat”...or a bit “down”. We crave this pleasant, feel-good feeling again...so sugar leads to addiction.

2. Boost Your Serotonin
Serotonin, aka “the happiness hormone,” can be raised through a natural low glycemic diet, daily exercise and plenty of deep restful sleep. When you have sufficient serotonin, you are less likely to have cravings for sweets.

3. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth With All Natural Stevia
The all-natural sweetener, stevia, has zero calories, does not raise blood sugar levels and is 300 times sweeter than sugar. If you have sugar cravings and want to satisfy your sweet tooth safely, Stevia is your best bet. Stevia comes in a liquid and powder form from your local health food store.

4. Drink Plenty of Water
You may sometimes think that your body is asking for sugar, when in fact it’s dehydrated and really craving water! Try this simple delicious cravings-buster lemonade: In 8 oz. of water, add the juice of ½ lemon and 5 drops of stevia. You could also try a warm cup of herbal tea, sweetened with stevia with your meals. This way your sweet taste is satisfied and you won’t want a dessert.

5. Have Plenty of Greens
Loaded with nutrition greens help boost your energy and help reduce cravings for sugar and processed foods. Green juices are an amazing way to add life giving and detoxifying plant chlorophyll to your bloodstream. As Jason Vale says in the documentary 'Hungry For Change', "juicing is the ultimate fast food, it is a 15 minute nutrient express to health". Here are some simple green juice recipes:

Green Juice Recipe Ideas:

- Celery, lemon and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, lemon (leave the skin on) and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, kale, lemon and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, lemon, parsley and pear (or apple)

You can also stir in whatever green powders you have on hand. I.e. barley grass, wheatgrass, spirulina or chlorella powders.

6. This or that brand of toothpaste, made with fluoride! The wonder drug that’s going to save our teeth from cavities! If you hear it enough growing up, especially as an impressionable youngster watching children’s TV with its endless toothpaste commercials, you just might start to believe it.

What the commercials don’t say is that fluoride was known in the early 1900s as an excellent rat poison. According to Robert Carleton, former scientist with the EPA, fluoride is more toxic than lead, and not quite as toxic as arsenic. It’s a waste product of many heavy industries—derived from the production of pesticides, fertilizers, aluminum, iron, steel, copper, lead, uranium, brick, cement and glass, among others.

Studies over the years have pointed to fluoride as a possible carcinogen, a bone-weakening agent and even a reason for decreased fertility among women. As the Oakland Tribune writes, a few grams of the stuff are enough to kill you.

And yet, most of us buy toothpaste with fluoride (it’s what our dentists usually recommend, after all). More ominously, two-thirds of the water supply in the United States is fluoridated, which some observers say is akin to forced mass medication.

Fluoride has been banned in many European countries because of possible health hazards. However, the United States government continues to push communities to fluoridate their water supply. A growing number of people think this has less to do with preventing cavities than with helping industry handle a toxic waste problem.

In 1998, Earth Island Journal ran an article by Joel Griffiths, titled "Fluoride: Industry’s toxic coup". Griffiths notes that fluorine is the most abundant of the highly toxic elements, such as arsenic, mercury and lead, found throughout the Earth’s crust. Ordinarily, only tiny quantities of these elements are found on the Earth’s surface, but industry mines huge amounts, especially of fluorine (most often in the form of calcium fluoride).

Fluoride emissions from the iron and copper industries was a problem as early as 1850, poisoning crops, livestock and people. In 1933, according to Griffiths, the world’s "first major air pollution disaster" struck when several thousand people became sick and 60 died in Belgium’s Meuse Valley. The accident was blamed on airborne fluoride emissions.

"It was abundantly clear to both industry and government that U.S. industrial expansion would necessitate releasing millions of tons of waste fluoride into the environment," he writes.

So in 1939, Gerald J. Cox, working for Alcoa (short for the Aluminum Company of America), proposed that fluoride be used to reduce cavities in children. After fluoridating lab rats, he concluded that fluoride reduced cavities and declared, "The case should be regarded as proved."

"The first public proposal that the U.S. should fluoridate its water supplies was made not by a doctor or a dentist, but by Cox, an industry scientist working for a company threatened by fluoride damage claims," Griffiths notes.

It was a brilliant piece of public relations, writes Griffith. "If fluoride could be introduced as a health-enhancing substance that should be added to the environment for the children’s sake, those opposing it would look like quacks and lunatics."

Industry was buoyant. Chemical Week, a publication for the chemistry industry, described the mood: "All over the country, slide rules are getting warm as waterworks engineers figure the cost of adding fluoride to their water supplies."

During World War II, aluminum production increased sharply for the war effort, as the material was used to produce fighters and bombers. Shortly after the war’s end, the federal government put its full weight behind water fluoridation.

Fluoridation: Does it Do Much Good?

Dr. John Colquhoun, the former principal dental officer for Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, was one of fluoridation’s staunchest supporters—until he looked into the world-wide data on fluoridation’s effectiveness in preventing cavities.

It isn’t even clear that water fluoridation has much of an impact on reducing cavities. Colquhoun, the former principal dental officer in Auckland, became a critic of fluoridation when he examined worldwide data, and concluded that there is little or no difference in tooth decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated places.

In fact, Colquhoun notes, one 30-year study of 400,000 children in India shows that tooth decay increases as fluoride intake increases. Tooth decay, the team decided, "results from a deficiency of calcium and an excess of fluoride."

Weakened Bones, Bone Cancer and Lower IQs

In a paper titled "Why I changed my mind about water fluoridation", which appeared in the journal Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, Colquhoun reviews several studies that show possible health risks from consuming too much fluoride. In addition to his growing shock over the number of cases of fluorosis in his own fluoridated city, Colquhoun also became concerned by the apparent link between fluoridation and weakened bones.

"Common sense tells us that if a poison circulating in a child’s body can damage the tooth-forming cells, then other harm also is likely," he writes. "We had always admitted that fluoride in excess can damage bones, as well as teeth."

In 1990, the first study suggesting a link between fluoridated water and hip fractures in the elderly was published. "Hip fracture rates have increased dramatically, independently of the increasing age of populations," Colquhoun writes. "Seven other studies have now reported this association between low water fluoride levels and hip fractures."

Colquhoun adds that fluoridation may cause a rare bone cancer, called osteosarcoma, in young males. Osteosarcoma has "increased dramatically" among boys aged 9 to 19 in fluoridated areas of America, he says, but not in non-fluoridated areas. The New Jersey Department of Health has reported osteosarcoma rates three to seven times higher in the state’s fluoridated areas than its non-fluoridated areas, for example.

Fluoride Facts:

Nearly 200 million Americans drink fluoridated tap water

According to the CDC, 41 percent of American teenagers have dental fluorosis, a clear sign of overexposure to fluoride

In the past 20 years, more than 250 communities across North America have rejected or ended fluoridation, largely due grassroots actions by citizens

97% of western Europe has chosen fluoride-free water

Fluoride is the only chemical added to drinking water for the purpose of medication

Fluoridated water is no longer recommended for babies

Ingestion of fluoride has little benefit, but many risks

The industrial chemicals used to fluoridate water may present unique health risks not found with naturally-occurring fluoride complexes

Water fluoridation’s benefits to teeth have been exaggerated

Due to other sources, many people are being over-exposed to fluoride

http://www.cdc.gov/fluoridation/safety/infant_formula.htm
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/11/08/how-you-can-help-end-fluoridation.aspx?e_cid=20111108_DNL_art_1
http://www.naturalchoice.net/articles/flouride.htm

Helpful Hints to Improve Memory

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2012/02/helpful-hints-to-improve-memory.html

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2012/02/helpful-hints-to-improve-memory.html#comments

Uncategorized

  [...]

Do you feel like you can't remember anything anymore? We have been given plants and natural laws, which if adhered to, can keep our brain healthy and our body well.

Studies show these time-tested nutrients and new brain breakthroughs can help you feel less absent minded. And you'll easily remember important dates, events and other precious information.

Wild Blueberry Extract: British doctors discovered a diet rich in ordinary blueberries reversed memory decline in as little as three weeks. The secret is blueberries' anthocyanins. They appear to stimulate the development of new brain neurons, improving neuronal signaling and communication.

Folic Acid: Best known for preventing birth defects in pregnant women, folic acid can also improve mental performance when used in the right amounts. In 2005 Dutch researchers discovered people who took 800 micrograms of folate daily knocked 5 1/2 years off their ages when it came to performance on standardized memory tests.4 And that was merely the average. Some people erased even more years.

Vinpocetine: An extract from the seeds of the periwinkle plant, vinpocetine helps improve blood flow to the brain. Three separate studies of older adults with memory problems found it significantly improved attention, memory and concentration over a placebo. Some people reported increased mental alertness and a surge of new energy and vitality.

DMAE: DMAE or dimethylaminoethanol is found naturally in your brain. It supports the neurotransmitter acetylcholine that's necessary for mental sharpness. As you age, your DMAE levels plummet. Research suggests replenishing lagging levels can help improve concentration.5

Pantothenic Acid (B5) and Vitamin B6: Helps the brain make neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine.

Vitamin B12: Helps the brain manufacture SAMe, the neurotransmitter associated with a calm, happy mood.

Phosphatidyl: A basic building block of brain cell membranes. Research shows phosphatidylcholine or PC works well when taken with CDP-choline to enhance memory function.

N-Acetyl Cysteine: An amino acid that helps the body produce the mega-antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione protects cell membranes from damage.

Rosemary and Ginger: Two common kitchen herbs that together, fight anxiety and improve blood flow to enhance memory.

Ginko Biloba: Scientific analysis of this substance shows that it can increase the function of your nervous system, and immune system to offer you the most protection from disease. This substance is recommended over prescription drugs because it is not toxic to cells and does not cause adverse side effects in the body when taken correctly and in moderation.

Are You At RISK for Memory Loss?

You may be at higher risk for memory loss if you suffer from one or more of these documented risk factors ...

High blood pressure. Whether it be classwork at school, adults at work, or the entertainment of tv and video games, we are an "indoor society". The following studies have found, what most of us know already, if we think about it logically. They have found that their positive outcomes when children were subjected to testing their eyesight in relationship to their outdoor activity.

Researchers in Australia have found an association between high levels of outdoor activity and low rates of short-sightedness, or myopia, in children.

The prevalence of childhood myopia has increased dramatically in recent decades. With rates of 80 percent in some East Asian populations, the search is on for possible causes.

"We know that there are genetic associations with myopia," New Scientist quoted Kathryn Rose of the University of Sydney in Australia, as saying.

"But the rapid changes in myopia prevalence are not consistent with a simple genetic determination, since gene pools do not change sufficiently fast," Rose added.

Suspecting that environmental factors might also be involved, Rose and colleagues set about investigating the effect that time spent outdoors has on the prevalence of myopia.

In the study, 2367 12-year-old Australian schoolchildren underwent eye examinations and completed questionnaires about their daily activities. What they found is, the lowest rates of myopia were associated with the highest rates of outdoor activity, irrespective of how much near work, such as reading, the children did.

The children with the worst eyesight did lots of near work and spent very little time outside. Interestingly, the study found no benefit from playing sports indoors.

In 12-year-old students myopia was most strongly associated with high levels of near work and low levels of outdoor activity. The findings suggest that it is the time spent outdoors rather than engagement in sports that is critical; the association between increased outdoor hours and lower myopia was found even if an outdoor sport was not included, while time spent on indoor sports, such as playing basketball in a gym, had no effect.

The researchers recommend further study to prove conclusively whether certain levels of time spent outdoors can control myopia and to define the mechanisms involved. The higher exposure to intense outdoor light may explain the lower prevalence of myopia in children in Australia, compared with ethnically matched peers in other countries, Dr. Rose says. She adds that "this protective effect suggests that a public health measure aimed at preventing development of myopia could be based on increasing the engagement of children in outdoor activity," including family and school activities and sports.

Sources:
http://www.medindia.net/news/Increased-Outdoor-Activity-Lessens-Myopia-Risk-in-Kids-40117-1.htm
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18294691
http://bjo.bmj.com/content/93/8/997.full?utm_content=2662258362&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=187015&key&utm_source=Emailvision&siteid=bmjjournals%3Fsrc%3DBJO_HC_4&ijkey=VqCWhiZi7cfaQ

Natural Prevention and Treatment of Allergies

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2011/11/natural-prevention-and-treatment-of-allergies.html

http://www.hs-wholistic.org/3/post/2011/11/natural-prevention-and-treatment-of-allergies.html#comments

Uncategorized

[...]

Physiologic Definition: An allergy is a peculiar response on the part of the body, an attempt to protect that leads to an injury. The way it works is this: A foreign substance, an antigen, finds its way into the body, is picked up by special cells called macrophages, which can only partially digest the antigens. When the macrophages have worked on the antigen as much as they can, it is regurgitated into the bloodstream where it is picked up by a second group of special cells called lymphocytes. These cells are designed to prepare antibodies against antigens. Antibodies are capable of neutralizing antigens. When the antigen and antibody unite, a third compound is formed which in some instances turns out to be the villain in allergies. Because the third compound injures the body, the cells in the skin, digestive tract, or nasal passages may release chemicals of injury which act on various target tissues. As a result of injury to the target tissues, a sort of reflexive action occurs—such as spasms, secretions of mucus, swelling of tissue, and inflammation.

Symptoms: Fatigue, poor concentration, learning disabilities, pale face or blotchy skin, dark circles or bags under the eyes, acne, dermatitis, cough, colds, sore throat, sinusitis, asthma, itching and watery eyes and more.Potential Allergens: Dairy products, citrus fruit, eggs, pork, beef, fish, peanuts, soybean products, tomatoes and potatoes, grains including corn, rice, wheat and yeast, honey, cane sugar, artifical colorants/preservatives, strawberries, apples, lettuce, onions, garlic, potatoes, bananas, over the counter/prescription drugs, hormones, toxic chemicals, housecleaning products, perfumes in products

Prevention:
1. Avoid, as much as possible, any chemical that touches the skin (including soaps, lotions, cosmetics, detergents, nail polish, costume jewelry containing nickel sulfate, merthiolate, medicines, dyes, etc.).
2. Avoid breathing anything that has an odor except fresh natural vegetation odors, including gasoline, aerosols, cosmetics and perfumes.
3. All drugs and medicinals, vaccines, venoms, molds, fungi, bacteria, and insects can cause allergies. Avoid them as much as possible.
4. Elastic in clothing, nylon, and other synthetics are a frequent cause of allergies and should touch the skin as little as possible. Cotton clothing is best.
5. Chilling of the extremities, especially the ankles and backs of the arms, promotes much chronic sinusitis and retards healing of skin rashes. Cool or cold skin anywhere on the body is abnormal and weakens the immune system.
6. Overeating and evening meals aggravate chronic sinusitis. Chew food to a cream before swallowing to prevent toxic fermentation. Use only two or three dishes at a meal with bread to avoid a “war” inside.
7. Avoid allergens named above for a time, using a "mono diet" for five to ten days. The mono diet allows the liver to be more active in detoxifying antigens, and also assists in identifying antigens in food. A short fast is beneficial in that it allows the liver to have a reprieve from its usual duties so that it may deal with the antigens more effectively.

Treatment:
At any time one recognizes an allergy, simplification of the diet, especially the elimination of animal products may assist in getting rid of allergies. To reduce one's exposure to various chemicals and to a wide variety of foods at one time can also decrease the likelihood of having allergies. That means: do not eat more than two or three dishes at a meal and allow no more than three eating experiences per day, a hearty breakfast and lunch, and a tiny supper if one is eaten at all. Avoid between meal snacks.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses, usually associated with food allergies. Except for the acute sinusitis which is generally caused by a virus, most cases of sinusitis are allergic in nature. Even if an airborne allergen is known to be involved, always start identifying the cause of sinusitis by eliminating allergens from diet and household. Ragweed hay fever has often been associated with a sensitivity to melons (especially cantaloupe) or bananas, two foods which should be omitted during ragweed season.

There are several very effective simple remedies employing heat that can be used for sinusitis. The first is a hot foot bath. Put the feet in hot water for about twenty or thirty minutes, followed by a brief cold water pour over the feet to prolong and intensify the action of the heat. This treatment may be done several times daily, or once daily for several days or weeks as long as the sinusitis lasts. The nasal passages can often be opened up in a matter of five minutes with the hot foot bath.

Another heat treatment used to open up the nasal passages is that of a hot compress applied directly to the face. Squeeze a towel from hot water and apply it directly over the sinus areas for five minutes. At the end of that time, place a towel that has been squeezed from ice cold water or cold tap water over the area for thirty seconds. Continue alternating hot and cold for three changes, ending with the cold. After each simple remedy the person should lie in bed 30 minutes to allow the treatment to "react". The reaction time insures that the full benefit will be obtained from the treatment. Repeat the treatment four times daily for the first week and once daily thereafter until sinusitis has cleared.

Six charcoal tablets (or 3 capsules or 1 heaping teaspoon of charcoal powder stirred in a glass of water) taken three times daily in the mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and at bedtime for approximately two weeks will often do wonders for chronic sinusitis.

Several double-blind studies have shown that breathing heated moist air for 20-30 minutes 1-3 times daily can give significant relief of nasal and sinus congestion, whether due to viral infections or allergies. This can be done using essential oils such as eucalyptus as well. Add boiling hot water to a bowl, add essential oil if using (1-2 drops is sufficient), put face over bowl and cover head with a towel to keep heat in.

Supplements: For prevention of severe asthma and certain other persistent allergies, use the antioxidant supplements. The following are often quite helpful:

Quercetin (a potent bioflavonoid) with C, 2 capsules daily; for asthma, increase to 2-3 times daily until relieved then gradually decrease to 2 a day. (available from Twinlabs).

Vitamin E 400 units (mixed tocopherols) morning and noon.

Selenium 200 mcgm. a day for adults and children over 12. There has been some talk of possible selenium toxicity, apparently only in the West in high selenium soil areas. The reports are not confirmed. To be on the safe side, do not take any supplements over long, several year periods; never exceed 200 mcgm. a day; and take a "vacation," leaving it off 1 month after being on it for 3 months.

Stinging nettle capsules, 2-6 every 4 hours as needed may be quite useful.

Butterbur. Butterbur is another effective herb to thwart allergies. In one study, a group of Swiss researchers showed how just one butterbur tablet taken four times daily was just as effective as a popular antihistamine drug in controlling allergy symptoms – without the traditional drowsiness that sometimes occurs with over-the-counter or prescription allergy drugs.

Don't forget the following!

WATER
6-8 cups daily and not at meal times.
May drink 2 cups Echinacea tea daily as immune system stimulant.

AIR
Pure air in bedrooms and workplace, summer and winter (no cigarette smoke).
Avoid dust, molds, mildewy areas, smog, pets (cats, dogs, and birds).
     Deep breathing exercises.

REST
Regularity, routine, and regimentation with some flexibility.
Schedule mealtimes, sleep time, worship and prayer, and devotional time.
     Simplicity, back to basics.
Enter into the blessings of the weekly 7th day Biblical Sabbath.

TRUST IN DIVINE POWER
Pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ
     Rededicate your life to Him.
Pray through the day. "Ye My flock, the flock of My pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord God." Jesus says, "I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine." "I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands." Ezek. 34:31; Isa. 43:1; 49:16.

Jesus knows us individually, and is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. He knows us all by name. He knows the very house in which we live, the name of each occupant. He has at times given directions to His servants to go to a certain street in a certain city, to such a house, to find one of His sheep.

Every soul is as fully known to Jesus as if he were the only one for whom the Saviour died. The distress of every one touches His heart. The cry for aid reaches His ear. He came to draw all men unto Himself. He bids them, "Follow Me," and His Spirit moves upon their hearts to draw them to come to Him. Many refuse to be drawn. Jesus knows who they are. He also knows who gladly hear His call, and are ready to come under His pastoral care. He says, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." He cares for each one as if there were not another on the face of the earth.

"He calleth His own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. . . . And the sheep follow Him: for they know His voice." The Eastern shepherd does not drive his sheep. He depends not upon force or fear; but going before, he calls them. They know his voice, and obey the call. So does the Saviour-Shepherd with His sheep. The Scripture says, "Thou leddest Thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron." Through the prophet, Jesus declares, "I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee." He compels none to follow Him. "I drew them," He says, "with cords of a man, with bands of love." Ps. 77:20; Jer. 31:3; Hosea 11:4.

It is not the fear of punishment, or the hope of everlasting reward, that leads the disciples of Christ to follow Him. They behold the Saviour's matchless love, revealed throughout His pilgrimage on earth, from the manger of Bethlehem to Calvary's cross, and the sight of Him attracts, it softens and subdues the soul. Love awakens in the heart of the beholders. They hear His voice, and they follow Him.

As the shepherd goes before his sheep, himself first encountering the perils of the way, so does Jesus with His people. "When He putteth forth His own sheep, He goeth before them." The way to heaven is consecrated by the Saviour's footprints. The path may be steep and rugged, but Jesus has traveled that way; His feet have pressed down the cruel thorns, to make the pathway easier for us. Every burden that we are called to bear He Himself has borne.

Though now He has ascended to the presence of God, and shares the throne of the universe, Jesus has lost none of His compassionate nature. Today the same tender, sympathizing heart is open to all the woes of humanity. Today the hand that was pierced is reached forth to bless more abundantly His people that are in the world. "And they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand." The soul that has given himself to Christ is more precious in His sight than the whole world. The Saviour would have passed through the agony of Calvary that one might be saved in His kingdom. He will never abandon one for whom He has died. Unless His followers choose to leave Him, He will hold them fast.

Through all our trials we have a never-failing Helper. He does not leave us alone to struggle with temptation, to battle with evil, and be finally crushed with burdens and sorrow. Though now He is hidden from mortal sight, the ear of faith can hear His voice saying, Fear not; I am with you. "I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore." Rev. 1:18. I have endured your sorrows, experienced your struggles, encountered your temptations. I know your tears; I also have wept. The griefs that lie too deep to be breathed into any human ear, I know. Think not that you are desolate and forsaken. Though your pain touch no responsive chord in any heart on earth, look unto Me, and live. "The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee." Isa. 54:10.

However much a shepherd may love his sheep, he loves his sons and daughters more. Jesus is not only our shepherd; He is our "everlasting Father." And He says, "I know Mine own, and Mine own know Me, even as the Father knoweth Me, and I know the Father." John 10:14, 15, R. V. What a statement is this!--the only-begotten Son, He who is in the bosom of the Father, He whom God has declared to be "the Man that is My fellow" (Zech. 13:7),--the communion between Him and the eternal God is taken to represent the communion between Christ and His children on the earth!

Because we are the gift of His Father, and the reward of His work, Jesus loves us. He loves us as His children. Reader, He loves you. Heaven itself can bestow nothing greater, nothing better. Therefore trust.

Jesus thought upon the souls all over the earth who were misled by false shepherds. Those whom He longed to gather as the sheep of His pasture were scattered among wolves, and He said, "Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and they shall become one flock, one shepherd." John 10:16, R. V.

"Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again." That is, My Father has so loved you, that He even loves Me more for giving My life to redeem you. In becoming your substitute and surety, by surrendering My life, by taking your liabilities, your transgressions, I am endeared to My Father.

"I lay down My life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again." While as a member of the human family He was mortal, as God He was the fountain of life for the world. He could have withstood the advances of death, and refused to come under its dominion; but voluntarily He laid down His life, that He might bring life and immortality to light. He bore the sin of the world, endured its curse, yielded up His life as a sacrifice, that men might not eternally die. "Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows. . . . He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all."
